Canada’s privateness watchdog on Friday declared an investigation into a US computer software startup reportedly able of matching photographs of unknown faces to photographs it mined from tens of millions of sites and social media networks.

In a statement, the Business of the Privacy Commissioner reported Clearview AI’s selection and stockpiling of much more than three billion photographs possibly violated Canadian law, if the pictures were being received with no permission.

The images—grabbed from well-known social media platforms including Fb, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube as effectively as millions of other websites—are utilized in its facial recognition application.
